  2. Biographical Information • Born Gaius Octavius in 63 BCE; died in 14 CE • Son of Julius Caesar’s niece • Adopted by Julius Caesar, posthumously, in 44 • Reigned from 27 BCE to 14 CE

  3. Ascent to Power • Second Triumvirate, 44 BCE – ruled Rome with Mark Antony and Aemilius Lepidus • Ruled with Mark Antony, 43 BCE until 31 BCE, Battle of Actium • Senate in 27 BCE gives Octavian title of “Augustus,” meaning revered one or highly respected

  4. Accomplishments • Leadership brought peace and prosperity to Empire, era known as the PaxRomana • Built many roads that made trading throughout the empire easy • Had strong relationship with Senate • Took census: Counted population of the Empire

  5. Built Rome into a Glorious City • Cleaned up political corruption in the city of Rome • Improved the way government ran so it became more efficient and effective • Upgraded old buildings and constructed new ones • Reformed the empire’s religious and moral codes – revived traditional Roman values such as hard work and faithful marriage.
