6. The Ruhr Crisis 1923 INPUT Germany was forced, under the Treaty of Versailles to pay reparations to those countries effected by war. Germany could not afford to pay the reparations. France and Belgium were angry because this was breaking the Treaty of Versailles. In order to receive reparations, France and Belgium sent 60, 000 troops into the Ruhr- a rich industrial area in the Rhineland. They would take food, coal, iron ore, steel and timber produced by the Germans as a form of reparation. Germany replied with passive resistance (strikes of non cooperation) The French and Belgians responded by deporting 150,000 strikers. 132 Germans were killed who clashed with French troops. How could the Weimar Republic respond? What problems does this present them with? In what ways has the Treaty of Versailles been broken?

7. INPUT Inflation occurs when the price of goods increases at a greater rate than a persons income or wage. In 1923, Germany was faced with hyper inflation, this is were inflation spirals out of control. In order to make reparations, the Germany government printed more money, this decreased the value of money. Eventually it was worthless.
