Purpose of the refresher session • Alps culture and values • Alps national benchmarks and minimum expected grades • Understanding an Alps report • Tracking and monitoring student progress effectively
The Alps Mission: To support schools & colleges in raising student progress thus improve the life chances of young people
What is Alps? • Devised by Dr Kevin Conway CBE, Principal Greenhead College (1987- 2001) • Focus on supporting students • Specialised personal tutors • Raising staff expectations • Established a culture of self belief • Achievement/pass rates • Value added & retention • Ensuring no student falls through the net
An individual An exception To be valued Everyone is : Alps basic principles:
Behind each piece of data is a young person Alps helps you to improve their progress
To be effective Alps requires: Leaders who continuously work on the systems with staff to improve them Staff training so everyone understands and works the systems Student training so they also understand and work the systems Teamwork between students and staff
From start to finish - all use the same methodology Prior attainment KS2 Fine Grade Prior attainment Average GCSE score Alps points ‘old’ UCAS points Alps points ‘old’ UCAS points GCSE points Key Stage 5 Key Stage 4 BTEC – Level 3 Prior attainment Average GCSE score
This is the national dataset for Key Stage 5 These are the MEGs for each prior attainment band 1. Prior attainment split into bands This grade A+ then becomes the Minimum Expected Grade (MEG) for that band of students These are the MEGs for each prior attainment band In the bottom provider, students in this first band achieved 106.06 points on average or grade A/B In this prior attainment band these students gained average scores of 124.33 grade A+ In the top provider, students in this first band achieved 132.00 points on average or grade A*- Now we look at the progress students have made in each band Alps analysis is based on the provider, at the 75% line
The MEGs for the 2010 suite Prior attainment bands slightly different to A level The MEGs for the 2016 suite 2010 suite MEGs 2016 suite MEGs The same principles apply to the BTEC 2010 and 2016 suites BTEC MEG comparison These are the MEGs for each prior attainment band
MEGS & Aspirational Grades Alps sets minimum expected grades for bands of students based on the performance of the top 25% in the DfE National data set We hope for all students to reach and go beyond these high targets, instead of providing best-fit estimated grades/chances graphs Setting these expectations early with each student is very important – challenge the quality of their work – look for stretch and challenge
How MEGs relate to the Alps grades for your subject If everyone in your teaching group achieved their MEG, then you would achieve an overall Alps score of 1.00 But each subject has its own unique thermometer, where departments in the dataset have been given an Alps score then ranked. Alps scores
Using the MEGs at a subject level • How does progress in your subject compare to that MEG? • How will you set a subject specific target which is aspirational enough to get you a red Alps grade?
What does an Alps score of 1.00 mean for my subject? At A Level At BTEC Biology Mathematics English Literature Religious Studies Media Studies 2010 Ext Dip Art & Design 2010 Ext Dip Performing Arts 2010 Ext Dip Business 2010 Dip Health & Social Care An Alps score of 1.00 yields very different Alps grades dependent on subject Students nationally make better progress in some subjects than in others
Setting targets by subjectMEGs as a starting point At BTEC At A Level Biology Mathematics English Literature Religious Studies Media Studies 2010 Ext Dip Art & Design 2010 Ext Dip Performing Arts 2010 Ext Dip Business 2010 Dip Health & Social Care • You need to set your subject specific target to ensure you are being aspirational • In biology, subject targets may be in line with the Alps MEG, whereas in media studies may have subject targets that are one above the Alps MEG. • Finally, you should clearly take other factors into account, i.e. if a student has a particular flair in your subject
