Strengths • national organization with 27 centres across Canada • ~ 5,000 members • royal charter • diverse membership, consisting of both amateur and professional astronomers • affiliated with universities, planetariums and other astronomy and other science related institutions • oldest astronomy organization in Canada • long established relationships with other organizations of a similar nature

  8. Vision Statement To be the leading national organization in North America to promote the advancement of astronomy and the allied sciences in all key programs and services provided by the Society, as judged by our peers in the astronomical community..

  9. Supporting Goal To organize and conduct high quality activities which satisfy the astronomical needs and interests of the membership, and enhance their enjoyment of astronomy.

  20. Future Activities • Establishment of a Professional Astronomer’s Division to address the specific needs of this group of members. This could take the form of a virtual centre with own executive and national council representative.

  21. Future Activities • Establishment of a Commercial membership category to address the specific needs of the increasing number of members who make all or part of their livelihood from the sale or manufacture of astronomical products or services

  22. Future Activities • Establish a national observatory in a remote location that can be access by all members via the internet.

  31. Next Steps Review what has been presented with the Centres. Determine if the development of a Mission Statement would benefit the RASC. Establish a Mission Statement Development Team. This team should consist of the Executive and a “Champion” from each Centre who will be responsible for implementing the Mission statement at the Centre. Develop the Mission Statement with wording appropriate to the RASC.
