8Every undergraduate student has the opportunity to participate! That means you!* Every major, every program has projects for students, even new students. *As long as you are in good academic standing. If not, concentrate on your classes.
7You can participate in classes that involve authentic research or creative projects. Look for the RS designation on classes – it stands for Research & Scholarship intensive. These classes give you real, hands-on experience in the topic that you can use!
6Students as Scholars activities are built into Advanced Composition ENGH302 enhances your research and writing skills, and prepares you for your other classes.
5Students can work on individual research or creative projects for credit, and sometimes, get paid. Use HireMason to projects, including Federal Work Study Research Assistantships, and ask your professors about opportunities.
4OSCAR runs the competitive Undergraduate Research Scholars Program. URSP proposals are accepted each semester. You can participate in fall, spring or summer. The URSP grants support projects mentored by faculty, and can be worth up to $4000.
3OSCAR supports travel to conferences or other events to share project results. The Undergraduate Student Travel Fund (USTF) supports more than 50 students each year to travel nationally and internationally. The National Conference on Undergraduate Research is very popular!
2Talk to a professor or other Mason staff to get started. They really like to talk about their own scholarly work! Click our “find a mentor” on the student page or visit your professor or advisor.
1Undergraduate research and creative projects are fun! Of the students in the URSP last year, 86% said that having FUN was a major reason for doing the project! They also wanted to build their resumes for jobs and/or graduate school.
