Locate where the American Indians settled with emphasis on Artic (Inuit), Northwest (Kwakuitl), Plateau (Nez Perce), Southwest (Hopi), Plains (Pawenee), and Southeastern (Seminole).b. Describe how the American Indians used their environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter.
Hopi Indians - Facts • Hopi means good, peaceful, or wise • They live in Northeast Arizona • They live in pueblos • The women own the land and the house • The men plant and harvest, weave baskets, and perform the ceremonies. • They invented sandpaper • When a child is born, they are given a special blanket and a perfect ear of corn • On the 20th day, the baby is taken to the cliff of a mesa and held facing the sun. When the sun hits, the baby is given a name • There are a bout 7,000 Hopi Indians today
Where Hopi Indians are found Hopi Indians are found in Northeast Arizona. This region has a hot and dry climate with mountains and deserts. There reservation is surrounded by the Navajo Indian reservation. Today, they still have disagreements of land, resources, and other problems that come about.
What food did they eat Corn was sacred to Hopi Indians. They believed as they moved from the third way of life to the fourth that they were given corn. They also grew squash, beans, sunflowers, melons, cotton, carrots, onions, and other things. They used the sunflowers for oil and purple dye. Squash was also used to make utensils and musical instruments. They also made lemonade using Sumac berries
Their shelter • The Hopi Indians lived in homes built much like the Pueblo houses, made with adobe and built like boxes stacked on top of each other. Adobe is a sun-dried, unburned brick of clay and straw.
What they wore? Women wore a un-dyed cotton robe with an embroidered belt and the men wore a un-dyed strait sleeved or sleeveless shirt that was worn like a poncho, leggings cut off just above the knees, and moccasins made of deer skin. Their ceremonial dress was much more colorful decorated with feathers.
