Structure of EDI Transaction • Each element including the Segment ID is separated by a character called a delimiter. • Each segment ends with a character called a segment terminator • Each transmission can be broken down into five distinct areas: • Communications Transport Protocol, Interchange Control Wrap (ISA & IEA) • Functional Group Wrap (GS & GE) • Transaction Set Wrap (ST & SE), and the body of the transaction • A transaction can also be broken down into four distinct areas: envelope, header, detail, and summary information
How EDI Work 1. Preparation of electronic documents • Collection of information and data. For example HAWB, Packing List…etc. 2. Outbound translation • Translate the database into a standard format according to the specification of the corresponding document.
How EDI Work 3. Communication • Connect and transmit data files to the pre-arranged VAN automatically. • Each file should be route to the appropriate e-mail boxes according to the destination set in the file. 4. Inbound translation • The trading partner retrieve the file from their e-mail boxes in a constant period. • Translating the file from the standard format into the specific format.

EDI Translator • EDI translators are used to interface the files received in standard format with internal applications. Translators provide for scheduling of processes, mapping, and communications. TGAX currently uses STX for DOS and GENTRAN Server for NT Gentran: Server for Windows NT • Electronic commerce solution deployable in WINS NT /2000 client/server environment • Provide a graphical user interface • Majors components include mapping utilities, partner configuration utility, data translator, message management subsystems, process control.
