The foreign born population is becoming a more visible force… with the last decade showing the largest growth in history. Greenville’s foreign born population in 2001 was 15,863, 4% of the total population. This is a growth of over 200% from the 6,000 residents in 1990.

The foreign born population is becoming a more visible force… with the last decade showing the largest growth in history. • Greenville’s foreign born population in 2001 was 15,863, 4% of the total population. This is a growth of over 200% from the 6,000 residents in 1990. • Greenville and South Carolina are still below the national average on the number of foreign born of 11%.   3. 1990 % Hispanic Population In 1990, the Hispanic population was relatively non-existent. Only one census tract had more than 2% of its population with Hispanic origin. Ethnicity Source: Claritas, 2001

  4. 2000 % Hispanic Population The reported Hispanic population in the county has grown over 400% in the last ten years. Now, several census tracts have in excess of 15% Hispanic populations. Most foreign born residents are not citizens. • In 2000, 95.1 percent of Greenville County’s population was NATIVE and 4.9 percent was foreign born (2.9 percent for South Carolina). • Of the 18,420 foreign born resident of Greenville County, 29.6 percent were naturalized citizens and 70.4 percent were not citizens.
