  2. Fill in the Crisis Web • Accidents/illness of family members • Death • Divorce • Domestic violence • Job loss/financial difficulties • Relocation/family move • Substance abuse • drugs and alcohol • World events • natural disasters, terrorism

  3. Accidents/Illness • Give honest explanation • At child’s age level/understanding • Reassure child if person will recover • Be truthful, calm, and reassuring if person will not recover • Let child know its not their fault • Don’t let children overhear conversations

  4. Death-Basic part of life • Allow talking and grieving • Explain at age level • Don’t give false hope person may return • They did not cause the death • Keep child’s routine

Divorce-10% of all children currently live with a divorced parent • Keep normal as possible • Don’t discuss problems with or in front of children • Give honest answers • Explain custody plan if old enough • Develop new traditions • Never give false hope of reuniting • Help children SIT w/ friends • Watch for behavior changes • School can help children adjust

  6. Domestic (family/home) Violence (fighting) • Be support person • Seek help • Family • Local DV agencies • Counseling • Work with school for child’s safety

  7. Job Loss/Financial Difficulties • Don’t argue about $ in front of children • Don’t hide $$$$ problems from older kids • Be clear about possible consequences & need to cut back on spending

  8. Relocation/family move • More than 1/5 of population moves each year • Point out the positive • Be honest even about the negatives • Explain each step that will happen • If possible, visit where you will move • Let children help pack • Spend lots of time with children before and after the move

  9. Substance (drugs & alcohol) Abuse (misuse) • Support groups • Talk • school counselor • trusted teacher • religious leader

  10. World Events, Natural Disasters,Terrorism • Seek • safe shelter • counseling • Keep children safe • Reassure children • Talk to let them know what is happening
