SITA UK MARTIN COOPER, Senior Commercial Dry Recyclables Trader
SITA UK – DRY RECYCLATES • We move material into the UK, European and world markets • Large tonnages of loose newsprint is contracted to the big UK mills • Most of our glass goes into the UK market • Metals: we have a separate division for metals, they are sold into the UK and export markets • OCC Cardboard, mixed paper, plastics and medium grade paper move into both UK and export markets • Textiles all go via UK businesses into the world markets
2008 MARKETS CRASH • Almost overnight the dry recyclate markets dropped from an extreme high to almost zero • Some companies considered storage, we did not • Through good relations and lots of hard work we avoided sending any recyclate to EFW (incinerators) or landfill • Reliance on the export markets, when the export market almost disappeared for a few weeks the recycling industry was left with nowhere else to go
COLLECTION METHODS • Kerbside sort – stillage vehicle • Commingled two stream– without glass • Commingled single stream– with Glass
QUALITY • Best and guaranteed quality is created from kerbside sort • Commingled collections with glass will provide good quality but more technology is required • Commingled collections that include glass can provide a good quality material but the cost of the technology is higher • All our customers have quality spec and contamination thresholds we have to adhere to • Recycling Registration Scheme (RRS) Scheme – SITA have 4 member facilities and will be adding more in the future
CHANGES IN 2009 • Since January 2009 across all the grades we have seen around a 60% increase in revenues for the sale of Bulk Dry Recyclate • Tonnages of collected material have decreased across the board by around 20% • The drop in tonnages has assisted in the quick turn around in the markets over 2009
SUMMARY Current market is buoyant Good start to 2010 Export markets continue to dictate the value of materials More and more tonnage will go into the export markets UK recycled tonnages will keep on increasing as we get better at it
