Draw a picture of a wave. Label any parts you know • Name specific waves with which you are familiar 3) Describe the source of one of the waves you named 4) What does it mean when we say that waves transfer energy?
Medium • Substance or material that carries the wave • Sound? • Ocean? • Slinky? • Stadium?
Crest = top of wave Trough = bottom of wave
Wavelength • The distance between two corresponding points on consecutive waves • Usually crest to crest
Amplitude • Amount of particle displacement • Usually from rest to crest
Frequency • The amount of waves that pass by during a certain period
As frequency increases … • Wavelength decreases • Energy increases
Two main types of waves 1) Transverse 2) Longitudinal (compression)
Transverse Waves • Wave moves left to right • Particles (disturbance) move up and down • Perpendicular ( 90 degrees)
Longitudinal Waves • Wave travels left to right • Particles (disturbance) move left to right • Parallel
Energy moves through waves – not particles • Particles return to their starting (resting) position
Water waves • Beaches are not flooded!
