  5. Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS) • A computer/web-based program that assesses the early literacy and numeracy skills of students in kindergarten. • The purpose of this assessment is to find out what skills students have when they start school so that appropriate learning programs can be prepared.

  6. PIPS • There will be 2 assessments for each child. • Baseline assessment: Weeks 3 & 4 in Term 1. • Final assessment: Early Term 4. • There is no need to prepare your child for either of these assessments.  • Each assessment is conducted in a 1:1 setting, in front of the computer with the child’s classroom teacher. • For any queries, speak to your child’s classroom teacher.   7. What will Mathematics look like in Kindergarten? • Kindergarten Mathematics is very ‘hands on’ using concrete materials and games to explore, learn and consolidate concepts. • Exploring patterns and shapes

Reading is the key to learning • Reading to your child; a shared experience • Visiting the library to choose interest books and ‘good fit’ books • The importance of picture books • Discussing what has been read • Questioning to build comprehension • The pictures hold clues to the text and support meaning

  12. Explicit multi-sensory approach • Children will build letter/sound knowledge through: • Visual mode (seeing) • Kinaesthetic mode (actions) • Speech (articulation of correct sounds) • Aural mode (hearing) • OT partnership with UC • Sight vocabulary is essential… “ tricky words”

What are the features of the program? • Upper/lower case letter knowledge • Correct letter formation • Learning a letter a day ‘Ss’ • Linking sounds to quality texts • Building from letter knowledge to word knowledge to sentence knowledge • Incorporating letter blends e.gsh, ch and digraphs such as ai, oa

  14. Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Viewing • Occur every day • All children are readers and writers; its our job to grow them in partnership • Learning doesn’t just happen at school, consolidation of taught concepts supports recall and retention… we need your help!

Home Study Guidelines • Book and sequence will be issued on Friday • Do not race ahead – follow the sequence • What if my child does not bring the sequence of sounds home each Friday? • The home study books will be recalled twice a term for feedback • Teachers are there to support you. Contact them when you need help.

  18. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION • Physical Education includes aGross Motor session on Thursday (wear sports uniform on this day) • Fitness sessions are run throughout the week • Aqua Fun Day- Term 4 end of year activity • Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals – Term2and 3

  19. DSTA • Sarah McGavin • The DefenceSchool Transition Aide Program provides support to children of ADF members and their families, particularly during times of transition or during parental absences due to deployment, exercises or courses • Sarah.McGavin@ed.act.edu.au

Who are we? • We are Volunteers who care about what is happening within our school. • The main role of our P&C is to create and maintain a sense of community by fostering relationships between parents, teachers, and children. • We do this by encouraging parents to become actively involved in the activities of our school and in the education of their children.

What do we do? • 2nd Hand Uniform shop • Opening times to be advised. • Fundraising Events Including: • Twilight Fair • Mothers Day Stall • Fathers Day Stall • Art Show • Sausages sizzles & cake stalls Community Building Facebook Information Page Community Morning Tea Assistance with school-run activities Provide social opportunities for parents and children Canteen Run 5 days a week Paid staff, with the help of volunteers Lunch orders via Flexischools
