  6. OCLC-MARC Update 2019

  7. Will incorporate changes from MARC 21 Update No. 27 (issued November 2018) • New MARC codes announced since the 2018 OCLC-MARC update through March 2019 (some already validated in WorldCat) • Timing: Not yet determined (sometime in 2019) • Technical Bulletin 269 (issued April 24) has details: oc.lc/tb269 • OCLC-MARC Update 2019

  8. Bibliographic records: • 041 field, new subfields $p, $q, and $r; subfield $j redefined • New field 251 (Version information) • New field 341 (Accessibility Content) • New field 352 (Accessibility Note) Authority records: • 055 field revised description and new $2 • OCLC-MARC Update: A few highlights

  9. OCLC will not implement the changes to control subfield $6 at this time, as it would be a very large undertaking. • OCLC already uses the 4-character alphabetic ISO 15924 codes to identify scripts in bibliographic records, but not the 3-digit numeric values. • In WorldCat, $6 is always system-supplied; it is never entered manually and it does not appear in online displays. • Will not implement $6 in Bib, Auth, Holdings

  10. Punctuation Macros

  11. Removing Punctuation • Will eliminate ISBD and non-ISBD punctuation in most fields • Access points will continue to retain most internal punctuation • Will eliminate terminal punctuation • Will recode Leader/18 (Desc) to code c or n • Adding Punctuation • Will add ISBD-based punctuation in most fields • Will add terminal punctuation • Will recode Leader/18 (Desc) to code blank, a, or i • Connexion Client Macros

  12. NACO Macro

  13. Originally issued in 2013 • Needs to be updated to reflect changes in policy and practice • Coding of dates in field 046 • Gender in field 375 • Geographic name changes affecting fields 043 and 781 • Bug Fixes • Send any issues to me: bremerr@oclc.org • Update of NACO Generate Authority Macro

  14. Encoding LEVELS

  15. Topic we started discussing at OpCo last year. • Goal is to eliminate the OCLC-defined alphabetic encoding levels in bibliographic records and utilize MARC21 encoding levels • Important historically in WorldCat • I = full level – duplicates MARC 21 code blank • K = minimal level – duplicates MARC 21 code 7 • J = deleted record – loss of encoding level info • M = record loaded via batchload/DataSync - loss of encoding level info • L (already eliminated from database and made invalid in 2018) • Update on Encoding Levels

  16. Conducted 4 focus groups in December 2018 with Research, Academic, Public, and Special Libraries • Discussed with other product areas at OCLC Jan-Mar 2019 • Prepared initial draft specifications for converting records within WorldCat We are: • Currently working on requirements for coding changes needed • We have:

  17. Members want some indication that the record has been loaded rather than entered online (currently encoding level M) • Members want advance notice of the change • Members want OCLC to supply training (in writing and also visuals) on use of the MARC21 encoding levels • OCLC product areas don’t have major concerns; but we have lots of work to do to make this change happen • What we learned

  18. Thank you! Send cataloging policy questions at anytime to: askqc@oclc.org Robert Bremer Cynthia M. Whitacre bremerr@oclc.orgwhitacrc@oclc.org
