Getting a foot into the Door • Getting a foot into the door • “The Door” - Research process • Understanding “The Door” • Follow up “The Door” • Match the Foot to the Door • Oil fuels vs. Alternate fuels • Employment opportunities at Westport Innovations
“The Door” - Research process • Industrial Directories. • Local newspapers and Internet. • Use and create your own net work. • Use Informational interviews. • Identify the needs in the job market. • My job was finding my dream job.
Understanding the “Door” • Job Market • Differences between my home country and Canada – Vancouver job market. • Differences in the interview protocol. • Experience supported with measurable data. • Provincial programs. • SITE BC • EMAP
Follow up the “Door” • The timing of the hiring process • Which company has similar values to mines? • What is the current situation of the company? • Are there open positions that my profile could match? • Is my profile the adequate to fill that position? • When is the best time to call / meet for an interview?
Match the Foot to the Door • Study the history of the company. • Understand the needs of the company. • Asses if you match the position. • Your own skills • List of skills and experience. • Share the best of you. • Be yourself. • Visualize to work there. • Sale yourself and enjoy it!
Oil fuels vs. alternate fuels • Oil fuel • Oil Peak Source: Gibson Consulting
Alternate fuels • Alternatives • Solar panels • Geothermal • Wind turbine farms • Nuclear • Hydrogen fuel cells • Natural Gas
Motivators for all Alternative Fuels continue to grow: • Air quality • Energy Security • Climate Change • Natural Gas is domestic, with proven reserves. • Clean burning, low carbon fuel. • Technology is here today & advancing significantly
Natural Gas • 6, 300 trillion cubic feet (tcf) is the worldwide reserve. • Compressed natural gas CNG (methane) is a cleaner alternative to other automobile fuels such as gasoline and diesel due to lower content of carbon particles. • The energy efficiency is generally equal to that of gasoline engines, but lower compared with modern diesel engines. • Gasoline vehicles converted to run on NG suffer because of the low compression ratio of their engines, resulting in a cropping of delivered power while running on NG (10%-15%).
Natural Gas in the World • Natural Gas Production
Westport Innovations • Natural gas vehicles are the cleanest, most practical solution for low-emissions transportation today. • High-performance, reliable natural gas vehicles offer a real and immediate alternative to conventional diesel and gasoline vehicles. • Fast approaching stringent emissions standards for commercial transportation, together with concerns about volatile oil prices and oil supply security are anticipated to bring economic advantages for natural gas vehicles.
Westport Technology • High Pressure Direct Injection • Gas injection into cylinder • Pilot diesel ignition • ~95% natural gas in Class 8 truck applications • Diesel engine performance • Same high power and torque • Same or higher efficiency
High Pressure Direct Injection • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions reduced by 40-50% • Particulate Matter (PM) emissions reduced by approximately 80% • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reduced by 20% to 25% • Same or better thermal efficiency • Same engine power and torque • Reduced dependence on oil for trucking and other high fuel use transportation applications
