  2. What Is Child Labor? “Child labor, as defined by International Labour Organization (ILO) is work done by children under the age of 12; work by children under the age of 15 that prevents school attendance; and work by children under the age of 18 that is hazardous to their physical or mental health. Child labor is an economic activity or work that interferes with the completion of a child's education or that is harmful to children in any way.”

  4. Child Labor in Ukraine • Many children enter into child labor because their family needs more money or their parent’s aren’t able to provide for them TetianaKondratuik writes for a Ukrainian news paper that “Some of them are forced to work, even by their own parents, who say “What will you get out of school?” “Let the child work.” “Better he should work than be an idler.””

  5. Child Labor in Ukraine • Often times children enter into illegal forms of work such as prostitution, selling drugs, and selling stolen goods The Kiev news paper says that ““workers,” who are engaged in such illicit activities are deprived of all legal rights.”

  6. Child Labor in Ukraine • One of the main ways child labor is prevalent in Ukraine is that children often times work alongside their parents in illegal coal mines • The International Labour Organization Reports that there are more than 800 mines in operation that use child labor • They say that these mines are some “of the most dangerous workplaces in the modern world”

  7. Interview with Dima, 15 year old Child Mine Laborer in Donbass, Ukraine • (What do you parents do?) • “My mother doesn’t work. She has 2 small children. Father has left us.” • Along with his grandmother’s small pension, Dima’s work supports 5 people. • (How much money do you bring to the family?) • “All the money that I earn here.” • (How much do you get in a month?) • “Between 30 and 60 dollars.” • Dima’s family is typical in this region where half of the legally-operated mines have closed down. The loss of jobs and lowered wages has caused many families to turn to illegal small scale mines or “Kopankas” to survive. Coal is very near the surface in this region of Ukraine, so a kopanka can be started anywhere.
