Testing Foods for Glucose Lesson 7 Food Chemistry
Background • When we tested liquids for glucose, you will recall there were liquids that tested positive for glucose. • Remember that there are variables that will effect your test results in any testing situation.
Materials • 1 lab bag • food bag • 2 pairs of forceps • 8 spoons • 1 package of toothpicks • 2 test trays # 1-10 • 9 glucose test strips
Testing Review What constitutes a positive test result? How is that recorded? What constitutes a negative result? How is that recorded? Answer the Pre-Lab question in your LRB.
Procedure • Place food in proper section of the testing tray that corresponds with the number on the food container. • Add 2 drops of water into each section and stir with a toothpick. • Wait at least two minutes. • Use the forceps to put one strip of glucose test paper in each section. Make sure at least half of the test paper is wet. • Compare the results to your control and record your observations.
Post-Lab • Answer the Post-Lab questions in your LRB. • Arrange testing strips in order to show which indicate the most to least glucose on your index card. Be sure to label these! • Answer in your LRB: • What are five facts you’ve learned about carbohydrates? (paragraph!)
