Hawaii’s Challenge • Goal: Develop a comprehensive program to affect behavioral change • Social marketing theory • Social-ecological model • Challenge: Developing a comprehensive program given: • requirements of SNAP-Ed • circumstances presented in Hawaii.
Kalihi-Palama Health Center • Ethnically diverse population • 12 languages and dialects • Target population: SNAP eligible population • Low-income, uninsured or Medicaid, homeless, recent immigrants, limited English speakers
Evaluation of Kalihi Palama Project Post-test only non-equivalent control-group design • Post-test at conclusion of Project Zest programs at KPHC • Control surveys conducted prior to nutrition-related community events in the immediate neighborhood of the health center. • Post-test and control surveys conducted concurrently over the course of the year Preliminary Results Project Zest appears effective at reducing perceived barriers to increased fruits and vegetables in the diet
