DOL #22 We could have stayed longer, but Jake was anxious to leave; I guess he wanted to watch the six o’clock news program at his cousin’s house. Whether I accept the award for Marcia depends on my having the time to go to the County Awards Banquet.

DOL #23 The truck that arrived at our house contained the furniture shipped from the West Coast, but no one was home to meet it. Doesn’t Darryl know that the farther he drives on this narrow road the smaller chance we have of arriving on time to Margaret’s party?

One of the articles you choose should be one you mostly agree with, and one should be an article you mostly disagree with. Due Tuesday. • Next book club: Friday, February 14th
DOL #24 Melissa and Jordan can’t attend the play because neither is able to drive; therefore, they stayed home and watched a video. The defective car skid and hit a tree in our garden, but the driver was not injured.

DOL #26 Mr. J.T. Pereira, my violin teacher, has a poster with this quotation from John Erskine: “Music is the only language in which you cannot say a mean or sarcastic thing.” The architecture in Dublin, Ireland, is an interesting blend of old and new; skyscrapers exist harmoniously with well-preserved old buildings.

DOL #27 Last May, Jack, the younger of my two brothers, found a sparrow with a broken wing under the porch and nursed it back to health. In the television lounge of Glenview Nursing Home, many residents sat and watched Jeopardy!
Honors Dystopian Literature: E Block 2/26/14 • DOL #28 • Journal: Which is more important: knowledge or happiness? • Read the story of the garden of Eden from the book of Genesis • Discuss: What’s the moral of the story? Do you agree with it? • Begin mind maps in groups: “What does it mean to be human?” • Homework: • Papers due Thursday • (Tomorrow in class with sub: finish mind maps.)
Some questions to consider as you create your mind map: • What makes a human different from an animal? • What makes a human different from a robot or computer? • Could a human ever be created differently from how they’re created now and still be considered human? • What roles do consciousness, identity, learning, relationships, language, and memory play in being human? • Is there ever a point where someone could “lose” his or her humanity? • Where do humans exist in the grand scheme of things (i.e., in relation to other things in the world)?
