Hypothesis DevelopmentCompiled by Caron E. Gala CSES Masters Candidate January 2004 Conceptual Notes on how to: develop and test A hypothesis involving the distribution of soil characteristics in 2 or 3 dimensional space.
Null Hypothesis Ho:μ1 = μ2 = μ3… μt Alternative Hypothesis Ha: at least one of the t population means are different from the rest. Hypothesis Testing μ1
Hypothesis Example: H1(o) = There is no difference in the ability of ASTER or Hyperion to detect underwater vegetation. H1(alt1) = Aster imagery detects more underwater vegetation than Hyperion. H1(alt2) = Aster imagery detects less underwater vegetation than Hyperion.
Objective Example: The objectives of this study are to: • validate the accuracy of ASTER and Hyperion data to detect underwater vegetation with field sampling, • …….(depends on hypothesis 2!)
