PURPOSE for PRESENCE • To help implement SDE goals for allstudents in Alabama schools. • To assist this school in improvingstudent achievement.

ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY • Use nationally normed test to assess student achievement. • Assist schools that have a majority of students scoring below the national norm. • Develop assistance programs for students scoring below the national norm. • Establish a program of self-help and state intervention. • Assist local boards of education that have a majority of low performing students
On-site Support System • Assign a “practicing professional” (me) • Provide intensive and sustained support to ensure that significant improvement or a Clear status is attained ** Focus on MLK’s current status
2001-2002 Status • Reason for current status • Show a decrease in the number of students scoring in the low stanine range "Failed in Caution Improvement"
General "SST" Tasks • Assist with the development of School Improvement Plan (SIP). Conduct a self-study. Examine causes of low student achievement. Develop a plan for improvement. Help monitor and evaluate SIP implementation
Work as a catalyst for change • Help identity and eliminate “change barriers” • Collaborate with the LEA and SDE NOTE: Don’t let the things you can’t change stop you from changing the things that you can change. SIP
Assist school in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting school data SAT 9 ~ 2001 GRADE SIX
Assist teachers with profiling SAT 9 scores • Share strategies to help teachers use profiles to direct instruction • Provide monitoring forms to ensure that SAT 9 skills are taught • Encourage teachers to include test-taking tactics in daily instruction

Assist with student-centered activities> Help identify and provide remedial assistance for low performing students> Help students set achievable goals> Conduct mini workshops ( EX: Target Your Studies)> Encourage and help teachers recognize/reward student accomplishments
Help provide needs-based professional development activities > Broker or provide in-services > Encourage grade/subject area planning and sharing > Monitor actual practice of new learning > Help mentor new comers to the professional
