New Ph.D. Examination Regulations (“Promotionsordnung”) • applies to faculties 17 - 22 of the University of Mainz, namely: • mathematics • physics • chemistry and pharmacy • biology • earth science • updates current edition from April 30th 1990, last changed January 24th, 2000 • bears all signatures, pending to be published in the Law Gazette any time; hence, applicable upon request (“im Vorgriff”) as of now(*) (*) according to Dr. Blachnik, Head of Central Administration for Study & Examinations at Univ.M. • affects Ph.D. students, who… … are not yet registered mandatory / no choice: new version … have not yet submitted their thesis upon request / default: old version … have their thesis already graded not possible / no choice: old version • has nothing to do with the faculties’ different Implementation Regulations (“Durchführungsbestimmungen”) which e.g. require teaching 2-3 courses at the university those will be updated over the next months
New Ph.D. Examination Regulations (“Promotionsordnung”) Old Version (January 24th 2000): Registration as Doctoral Candidate: §6 Signature of Supervisor voluntary;consent of examiners required §7 Pre-requisite: Scientific Education within the field of the Ph.D. (e.g. Chemistry)at a German University na -/- §8 No legal claim for Ph.D. supervision §9 Combination of examination subjects The Graduation Procedure: §11 Request for Graduation must include the chosen examination subjects;4x thesis in German (unless special permission); “Studienbuch” §17 After its acceptance by the evaluators, thesis on display for 2 or 6 weeks New Version (Edition 2004): Registration as Doctoral Candidate: §6 Signature of Supervisor mandatory;consent of thesis-evaluators to examine §7 Pre-requisite: Scientific Education of at least 8 semesters preferably within the field of the Ph.D. with certain degrees §7c Masters-Degree equals Diploma (if within) §8 If desired, the Dean provides a Supervisor §9 -- cancelled -- The Graduation Procedure: §11 Request for Graduation must include the chosen members of the PK;4x thesis in German or English;“Studienbuch” or similar certificates §17 After its acceptance by the evaluators, thesis on display for 2 or 4 weeks
New Ph.D. Examination Regulations (“Promotionsordnung”) Old Version (January 24th 2000): Oral Ph.D. Examination: §21 The Dean (or permanent substitute) is Chairman of Examination Committee (PK) §21 The PK consists of all thesis-evaluators, three Prof.s for the examination subjects, and s.t. representatives of other subjects §21 The Chairman must not be the supervisor §22 Examination on three subjects (one major, two minor; certain restrictions apply) §23 Presentation of results for 20-30 min.;30-60 min. discussion which must not be restricted to the thesis’ topic;the event is public §24 “Fail” requires 1 member of the PKto suggest this New Version (Edition 2004): Oral Ph.D. Examination: §5 Chairman of Examination Committee (PK) appointed by the Dean or a Committee of the Faculty Counsil (FBR) §21 The PK consists of the supervisor,two Prof.s from the field of the Ph.D. incl. the 2nd thesis-evaluator (if possible),and a 4th Prof. not from the Ph.D. topic §21 The Chairman must not be thesis-evaluator §22 -- cancelled -- §23 Presentation of results for 30 min.;30-60 min. discussion which should exceed beyond the thesis’ topic; for listeners with Ph.D. and above questions are allowed §24 “Fail” requires 2 members of the PKto suggest this
