II. Jewish Text: Torah—1st five books of the Jewish Bible (Old Testament)
A. Considered sacred writings, which are written about both actual events and stories to teach lessons.
Jewish History:A. Abraham—2000 B.C. chosen by G—d to be the “Father” of the Hebrew people
1. Yahweh—Hebrews name for G—d 2. Monotheistic—belief in only one god
B. Covenant—a promise between G—d and the Hebrews •Promised to obey G—d God abraham •Promised to protect Abraham and the Hebrews
C. Hebrews go to Egypt to escape drought and famine. Here they are forced into slavery.
D. The Exodus—(1300-1200 B.C.) Hebrews fled Egypt to escape persecution. Jews remember this each year through Passover.
While crossing the Sinai Peninsula, Moses climbed Mount Sinai and spoke to Yahweh and received the 10 Commandments
1. Thou shall have no other gods before me.2. Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol.3. Thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.4. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.5. Honor thy father & mother.6. Thou shall not murder.7. Thou shall not commit adultery.8. Thou shall not steal.9. Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.10. Thou shall not covet they neighbor’s wife.
IV. Hebrew Law: “an eye for eye” A. Laws were similar to Hammurabi’s Code B. Ethical Monotheism—Hebrews duty was to worship God and live justly with one another.
