Herbert Schiller • Was an American media critic, sociologist, author and scholar. • Earned his Ph.D. from New York University • Book: Communication and Cultural Dominance • Started two major trends: • 1. ) Private takeover of public space and public home • 2.) U.S Corporate domination of cultural life abroad

Cultural ImperialismAspects • is when powerful countries force their culture upon less powerful cultures via the military, the economy, or the media that do not have the means to repel it. • Where did the term come from? • The idea was around since 1900’s • No study until 1960’s where the term originated from • Introduces western ideas such as democracy and freedom • Forces economic, military, and media means upon a culture

  6. Cultural Imperialism Controversy • Cultural Resistance : shows general patterns by which some ideas in a culture become accepted and others are marginalized. It proposes ways individuals and communities can resist the hold of limiting ideas on their lives. • U.S. postwar policymakers wanted access to a country’s natural resources and goods.

Think Globally, Act Locally • urges people to consider the health of the entire planet and to take action in their own communities and cities. • Make use of our local cultural resources • Watch a TV program in our native language • Global enterprises forced to adapt, and link up with local partners Examples: Disney and McDonalds

Birth of ROK in South Korea • American soldiers radio station known as American Forces Korea Network( AFKN) • American military brought new music to South Korea • Some Korean groups would perform for the American military • Ssyodan bands break away from the military circuit and begin to perform for Korean audience • Soul kayo becomes popular and is establishes well before ROK • Vocal bands emerged which brought up inspection of youth on the streets. • ROK ~ Republic of Korea

Korean Wave • refers to the significantly increased popularity of South Korean culture around the world • It was in 1999 that reports of an emerging “Korean Wave" in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and other Asian countries started to come out. • Passes along cultural imperialism • Embraced by other countries • South Korea exported to other countries of Asia $12,356,000 worth of broadcast programs.
