  1. Tourism and Environment in Italy (reporting systems) Giovanni Finocchiaro (ISPRA) EIONET Workshop “ Scoping a TOUERM” – Purpose, structure, contents Copenaghen July 2014

  2. ISTAT surveys requested by Eurostat • Touristic accommodations • Capacity of tourist accommodation establishments; • Occupancy of tourist accommodation establishments; • Tourist flows in touristic accommodations - (Arrivals, Nights spent (presences), net occupancy rate of bed-places in hotels); • Italian households • Annual data on trips. • BANK OF ITALY - “The international tourism of Italy” survey • The main aim of this sample survey is the compilation of the voice “Travel” in the Italian balance of payments, in line with the methodological standards set by international organizations. • ISNART - National Tourism Research Institute – • Survey on the sales performance of touristic facilities; • Customer Service tourists - Satisfaction Survey for the holiday; • Foreign Markets. THE MAIN ITALIAN TOURISM DATA SOURCES

  3. TOURISM INDICATORS IN ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL DATA YEARBOOK • Tourist infrastructure • The indicator shows the main information concerning the tourist package, taking into consideration the capacity of accommodation establishments, in terms of the number of exercises and beds-places, as well as the total flow of tourist, divided into Italian and foreign, monitored through arrivals, nights spent and the average length of stay by type and category of accommodations. It is also estimated the degree of use of a structure, in a given period, with respect to its maximum potential, by means of the net occupancy rate. • The purpose of indicator is to quantify the accommodation capacity of all the accommodation establishments in the area. • Tourist infrastructure • The indicator shows the main information concerning the tourist package, taking into consideration the capacity of accommodation establishments, in terms of the number of exercises and beds-places, as well as the total flow of tourist, divided into Italian and foreign, monitored through arrivals, nights spent and the average length of stay by type and category of accommodations. It is also estimated the degree of use of a structure, in a given period, with respect to its maximum potential, by means of the net occupancy rate. • The purpose of indicator is to quantify the accommodation capacity of all the accommodation establishments in the area.

  4. TOURISM INDICATORS IN ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL DATA YEARBOOK • Tourist flows by mode of transport • The indicator represents the distribution of tourist flows according to the mode of transport used to make a trip. In the construction of the indicator you take into account the number of foreign travellers crossing borders both geographical, such as road and rail crossings, both "virtual", as the international airports and ports, and the number of trips made by residents in Italy for main modes of transport and type of trip. • The purpose of indicator is to highlight the different modes of transport used for tourist purposes.

  5. TOURISM INDICATORS IN ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL DATA YEARBOOK • Tourism intensity • To define the tourism intensity were taken into account those parameters that can monitor the load of the tourism in the area, in particular, the factors responsible for the pressures and impacts on the environment. • The "number of beds per capita" quantifies the touristic capacity of a region. The ratio “number of arrivals for the resident population” represents the weight of tourism on the region, while the ratio of “number of nights spent (presences) to the resident population” provides an idea of the effort supported by the territory and its structures. • The “number of arrivals” and the "number of nights spent (presences)" around the country and by month, highlight the areas that are particularly “hot” and the seasonality of tourist flows. • The “average stay tourist”, given by the ratio between the number of nights spent (presences) and the number of tourist arrived in the accommodation (arrivals), indicates environmental pressures associated with tourist accommodation such as, for example, water consumption, waste disposal, use of natural resources. • The purpose of the indicator is to determine the load tourist that act on the territory. The absence of reference values that permit the unambiguous assessment of the excess or less than the carrying capacity of the territory, is a evident limitation of the indicator.

  6. TOURISM INDICATORS IN ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL DATA YEARBOOK • Impact of tourism on waste • The indicator seeks approximately to measure the contribution of the tourism sector to the solid waste generation, pointing out how much waste per capita affected the tourist flows. • The indicator is calculated from the difference between the per capita municipal solid waste generation calculated using the resident population and the per capita municipal solid waste generation calculated, however, with the “equivalentpopulation”, obtained by adding to the resident population, the number of tourist nights spent (presences) recorded in the year and distributed on 365 days. • It’s evident that the indicator provides a measure still only part of the contribution of tourism to the municipal solid waste generation, because the daily presences without accommodation, i.e. the so-called “walkers/excursionist/hikers” or the nights spent (presences)in second homes are not quantified by the official statistics. Just as it would be considered the contribution to the economic activities and commercial services related to tourism that will certainly provide to the waste treated generation.

  7. TOURISM INDICATORS IN ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL DATA YEARBOOK(to be developed) • Tourism in regional and national parks • The indicator provides an analysis on its tourism supply in terms of accommodation (number of establishments and number of beds) and its tourism flows (arrivals and night spent) in Italian municipalities whose territory lies wholly or partly in areas occupied by parks. • It is thought to exclude provincial capitals as it is considered that tourism in these “big” cities is not attributable to the parks. • The study is limited only to national and regional parks, we are talking about roughly 24 national parks and 152 regional parks.

  8. TOURISM INDICATORS IN ITALIAN REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL DATA YEARBOOK • APPA Trentino-Alto Adige • Use of water for artificial snow to valley community/territory, expressed in litres per second (l/s) flow granted, or expressed in cubic meters per year granted; • Waste generation in areas with high touristic incidence: percentage of differentiated and undifferentiated waste in the areas with the highest incidence of tourism; • Traffic motorway in exit from territories at higher tourist (light vehicle); • Flow time of cableways (n. people/hour); • People carried on the cableway (n. people); • Length and number of ski lifts; • RESPONSE: Eco-museums in the territory; bike paths.

  9. TOURISM INDICATOR FOR THE NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR THE BIODIVERSITY (SNB) Agritourism The indicator shows the number of agritourism (farm houses), examining their composition, number of beds and agritourism activities offered. For agritourism means the offering of hospitality by a farm that has obtained the appropriate authorization and has adapted its structures to carry out this task. The indicator also highlights the number of agritourism with Ecolabel certification. The purpose of the indicator is to measure the presence of agritourism, as a form of integrated tourist activity in the territory dedicated to decrease the “weight” of the infrastructure on biodiversity and the landscape. Besides, tourist activities offered (hiking, horseback riding, bicycles) may give the measure of the systems adopted to minimize the impact of transport.

  10. The overall objective of this action is to provide a successful coordination and management of the individual action and activities in order to accomplish the project's goals and objectives within the budget constraints. The partner of this project has been Municipality of Ancona (IT) (Coordinating beneficiary), Municipality of Bullas (ES), Municipality of Patras (GR), Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities and ISPRA. In this work there are many potential indicators that link the relationship (in particular the impacts) between Climate Change and Tourism. http://www.actlife.eu/EN/index.xhtml
