Do Now: What are some elements needed for a civilization? • Surplus Produce • Cities • Specialization of Trade • Social Status • Shared Values • Writing • Rivers
Geography of India • Subcontinent • Mountains, deserts, rivers, and oceans separated the people of India from the rest of the World • 3 Major Geographic Zones • Far North – Himalaya Mountains • Snow melts and causes rivers • South – Deccan Plateau – high plateau that gets less rain • Northern Plains – where civilization first developed • Highlands used to support civilization • Floods regularly twice a year (Indus, Ganges, Brahmapurta River) • Heavy Rains • Monsoons
Positive and Negative Effects of Monsoons • People NEEDED monsoons to bring water needed for civilization • Rains flooded rivers and deposited rich silt farmers needed to grow crops • Monsoon rains too heavy = devastation – crops, homes, and lives can be lost • Monsoon rains too late = drought – cant grow crops
