  3. Early Life • Born 23 December, 1955. • Born in Glasgow before moving to Stafford, England. • Age of six. • Attended a Catholic school and an all girls school. • Was a passionate reader and writer at an early age.

  4. Adult Life • Attended the University of Liverpool. • Bachelor in Art. • Honours degree in Philosophy. • She had a relationship with Jackie Kay. • When she was 40 she went to her friend Peter Benson and tired for a child. • Carol Ann Duffy is a single mother. • Benson was always involved in the child’s life.

  5. Career • Worked as poetry critic for The Guardian. • Editor of poetry magazine, Ambit. • Had two plays performed at the Liverpool Playhouse. • First poems published at the age of 15. • Became Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. • Appointed Poet Laureate. • Was featured on the South Bank show with Melvyn Bragg. • She presented the Turner Prize to artist Richard Wright. • This gained her popularity.

  6. Awards • Honorary doctorates from- • The University of Dundee. • The University of Hull. • The University of St Andrews. • The University of Warwick. • Officer of the Order of the British Empire award. • Commander of the Order of the British Empire award.

  7. Style • She always writes from her experiences and emotions. • “Like the sand and the oyster, it’s a creative irritant. In each poem, I’m trying to reveal a truth, so it can’t have a fictional beginning.” • She has a nostalgia for childhood. • “Childhood is like a long greenhouse where everything is growing, it’s lush and steamy. It’s where poems come from.” • She has written many poems for children. • “I think poetry can help children deal with the other subjects on the curriculum by enabling them to see the subject in a new way.”

Style • She writes many poems to entertain herself as well as to entertain others. • She prefers using simple words rather than more ‘interesting’ words. • “I’m not interested, as a poet, in words like ‘plash’- Seamus Heaney words, interesting words. I like to use simple words, but in a complicated way.”
