  2. Objectives/goals Content: I will be able to justify how my obstacles and successes in eighth grade have lead to my overall personal growth. Language: I will use the language of Predict/Confirm/Adjust and Evaluation to discuss and write with my group. Social: I will respectfully collaborate with my group.

  3. After considering all the obstacles for your person, predict this person’s future. • Choose one language frame- • Because of the facts at hand, I can envision that… • Due to the fact that….I predict that person (#1,2,3,4)…

  4. Brainstorm Design a thinking map that defines the most challenging obstacle for each person. After each obstacle, determine whether it is an internal(personal), external, academic, physical, or social obstacle. (see next slide for example of thinking map)

  5. Brainstorm Internal-shy, self-confidence, self-image, belonging, depression, emotions, confused External-moving around, parents losing job, parents fighting, parent divorce, boyfriend/girlfriend breakup, parents losing job, death in the family Academic-GPA, one subject, few subjects, B-student Physical- moving, not enough sleep , dyslexia, running the mile, fitness test, lazy, sports Social- friends, parents, teachers, coach, family, siblings (bro/sis)

  6. What defines Success in middle school? • Within your frame of reference, write one way in which you can overcome each obstacle and become successful. • **It can be a small improvement • Examples: • Internal Obstacle- shy • Improvement- I will actively participate in class without being reminded. • External Obstacle-Friends talk negatively about me on Facebook. • Improvement- I will peacefully discuss with my friends how hurtful they are being.

  7. Justification Essay • Now that we have evaluated our own obstacles, we have come to understand that we must overcome them. • We will be using this information for our portfolio justification essay.

I can overcome them by____________________________. • I have come to believe that (insert Big Idea here) (determination equals success, organization can lead to being in control, if I believe in myself, I can accomplish anything)
