Main Ideas • Identify traits of good mental/emotional health • Develop skills to build your self-esteem • Practice communication skills to improve your mental/emotional health.
Mental and Emotional Health • People with good mental/emotional health are able to adapt. • Adapt- Adjust to new situations.
Characteristics of Good Mental & Emotional Health • You can accept the fact that situations will not always go your way or the planned way. • You set and achieve attainable goals • You understand and cope with feelings in healthy ways. • You express your feelings through your words and creative outlets.
What make you… You! • Personality • Unique combination of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that make you different from everyone else. • Self-Concept • The view you have of yourself.
What make you… You! • Self-Esteem • The way you feel about yourself, and how you value yourself • When things go wrong (like they will) those with high self-esteem have resilience. • The ability to bounce back from disappointment • EXAMPLES…?

What are Emotions • Feelings created in response to thoughts, remarks, and events • How do you express emotions in appropriate ways?
Expressing Emotions in Healthful Ways • Happiness • Sadness • Love • Fear • Guilt • Anger • Sympathy/Empathy
Expressing Anxiety • Anxiety • A state of uneasiness, usually associated with a future uncertainty • When anxiety builds up, it can interfere with normal and necessary functions like sleeping and eating. • Examples… • A heightened state of anxiety produces panic • Which is a feeling of sudden intense fear.
Dealing with Emotions • Empathy- ability to imagine and understand how someone else feels. • Defense mechanisms- Mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful situations. • Ex: Repression, regression, denial, projection, suppression, rationalization, compensation.
Managing Anger • Do something to relax- Listen to music, read a book… • Channel you energy in a different direction- Take a walk, go for a bike ride, play the piano, write down your feelings in a daily journal. • Talk with someone you trust- Sharing your thoughts and feelings may help your situation.

What is Stress • Stress is a normal reaction to certain situations or events in your life. • The body’s response to change • What do you stress about? • Stressor Anything that causes stress
Your Response to Stress • Part of the fight-or-flight response is the body’s production of adrenaline. • A hormone that gives the body extra energy.
Too much stress can lead to: • Physical Health: Headaches, digestive problems, high BP, Immune System breaks down and can no longer fight infections well. • Mental/Emotional: Feeling anxious, moody, irritable. • Social Health: Yell at others, withdraw, back off…

Coping with a Loss • Grief • The sorrow caused by the loss of a loved one. • This can be a family member, friend, or even a pet. • Grief lasts depending on each individual person • May be a day or a few years… • Movie Example: P.S. I Love You
Grief Reaction • The process of dealing with strong feelings following any loss. • Shock • Anger • Yearning • Depression • Acceptance
Coping Strategies • Ways of dealing with the sense of loss people feel at the death of someone close. • Confront feelings head on– Being sad and/or crying is completely normal. • Do NOT keep emotions bottled up. • Share with others • Religious traditions may help some cope with the loss of a loved one.
