Persuasive Writing Things to keep in mind… Choose a side and stick with it! Choose the side that is easier to write about… Even though your writing is based on your opinion, you still need to use factsin your essay. Use facts to show why your opinion is right! Use examples and anecdotes to illustrate your ideas. Be specific. When possible, use realstatistics and quotes to support your ideas.
Persuasive Writing • Things to keep in mind… 6. The other side—what would the opposite side say regarding your topic? Mention the opposing side’s idea and show why its wrong. • This is called a counterargument.
Persuasive Writing: Format • Use a five-paragraph essay format • Introduction • Include a thesis statement • A thesis statement is one sentence that tells your topic and the position you are taking in your essay • Mention your three points here • Three body paragraphs • Each body paragraph discusses a different fact with examples that proves your opinion true • Mention your counterargument in your second or third body paragraph • Conclusion • Restate your thesis and your main points • Do NOT introduce any new information here • Call to action if applicable • A counterargument may also be mentioned here, if not already mentioned previously.
