Grandpa sharpened the ax this morning. In other words, a transitive verb is a sentence with a direct object present. An intransitive verb expresses action without the action passing to a receiver, or object.

The students remained eager. A verb may be transitive in one sentence and intransitive in another: Janet swam ten laps. (transitive) Janet swam well. (intransitive)
