This session discussed the integration and strategic planning for cultural heritage protection, including the development of an integrated documentation protocol and the application of computational intelligence tools. The results so far demonstrate the need for European recommendations and the incorporation of protocols and guidelines into a European strategy for cultural heritage. Strategic cooperation with Information Society experts and the development of a knowledge-based decision-making system were also highlighted.

Overview and Further Planning of WP5 Integration Moderated Discussion Sunday 12th February 2012 16.15 – 15.30 Chaired by Prof. A. Moropoulou - Prof. R. Zarnic
General Conclusions • Task 5.1 Integrated Documentation Protocol serves the need to feed suitable decision making support system for Cultural Heritage Protection. It will be finalized by the contribution of the partners, till the end of this month. It will be commented by end-users until the final conference. • EU-CHIC Integrated Documentation Protocol with Advisory Committee’s contribution and review will be harmonised according to the European Standards and Codes. • This gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the need of European Recommendations mainstreaming the European Standards in CH implementation through applying concrete guidelines.
General Conclusions • Task 5.2 preliminary results indicate as the most adaptable to Cultural Heritage needs computational intelligence tool, the fuzzy -k means (fuzzy-neural) also applied by NTUA in consolidation and cleaning interventions. This is creating the conditions for Meta EU-CHIC Research Perspectives. • NTUA protocol validation applications provides the project with added value, demonstrating how the IC protocol and guidelines play a key role in the protection of CH monuments, recording all the data that corresponding to the selected criteria that participate actively in monuments conservation decision making process. • This can reveal the necessity of incorporating these protocols and guidelines to any European Strategy for Cultural Heritage, particularly after their efficiency will be confirmed by the applications
Strategic Planning for Further Research • The results so far show that strategic cooperation is built between EU-CHIC project and Information Society experts leading to their significant contribution into the scientific support of decision making for Cultural Heritage Protection. • Moreover a reliable system can be developed targeted to Cultural Heritage stakeholders as end-users of a knowledge based decision making system, creating added value and permitting to all Cultural Heritage policies to be knowledge based.
Basic strategy of WP5 is how to advance from an integrated protocol into parameterization of the state of conservation, so that with monitoring and control (with advanced in-situ measuring technologies) to develop knowledge –based decision support procedures that allow strategic planning of interventions to the monuments. • The EU-CHIC guidelines will thus regard an integrated environment focusing on each monument / historic building with the question to rationalize, to plan and execute diagnostic or conservation interventions complying to European Standards. • If EU-CHIC succeeds to apply at a pilot scale a validation of the guidelines of this integrated methodology on a EU-CHIC consortium monument, such as Schonbrunn, EU-CHIC could then generalize its proposals for further strategic planning as well as for the drawing of European policies and measures for the protection of European Cultural Heritage Identity. • Integration of WP5 with in situ application of the integrated protocol’s criteria in EU-CHIC monuments for protocols and guidelines validation
All the above of course can be accomplished only under the condition of CH Protection Research Reinforcement!!!!!!
