Susan Jewell • Students used TI-85 graphing calculators to find an approximate solution for a system of two equations • Students with TI-83 Plus graphing calculators were able to find a precise solution
Jeff Tomlinson – Part I • Students predicted NCAA Men/Women/Combined winners from the Sweet Sixteen • Students analyzed the data on paper using: • Charts • Ratios • Fractions • Decimals • Percentages
Jeff Tomlinson – Part II • Students then used Excel to graph one of their charts • Students graphed a new chart with their classroom statistics
Rose Reinhart • Students used an oscilloscope to understand the representation of sound • An oscilloscope is a machine that takes sound in through a microphone and produces a graph on the screen • Sound waves are represented by sine curves • As pitch increases, wavelength decreases
Jason Cox • Students used calculators to simplify fractions by turning them into decimals and fractions • Use of calculators increased test scores from 83% to 90%
Findings • Interested • Students were more engaged in activity because of visual cues (Mrs. Jewell) • Understanding • Students were able to grasp concepts more rapidly because of visual reinforcement (Mr. Tomlinson & Mrs. Reinhart) • Assessment • Student’s scores increased with access to technology applications (Mr. Cox)
Recommendations • Share findings with the rest of the Math Department • Explore alternative methods of technology inclusion in academic lessons • Train elementary staff in the effectiveness of short technology “bursts” • Additional TI-83 Plus graphing calculators needed
