Renal colic is a common illness, affecting 7-13% of the population. Treating renal colic incurs large expense, but detailed assessments of the true cost, are scarce. Aim To calculate the total cost of treating patients who present with renal colic and are subsequently managed with endoscopic techniques. An average patient requires; Day procedure 0.7 Multiday admission 1.8 Rigid cystoscopy 0.5 Ureteroscopy 1.1 PCNL 0.1 Flexible cystoscopy 0.4 JJ stents 1.2 Laser fibre 0.4 Basket 0.4 Methods Retrospective analysis of all patients managed endoscopically at Southern Health for renal colic, during 2011 Cost includes ED presentations, ward admissions, diagnostics, theatre time and procedures, as well out outpatient appointments.
