Formulating a Research Question Spring 2014
Doing research • A research topic usually deals with at least two concepts or ideas. • The focus of the research topic is usually the relationship between the two concepts. • Select a topic that is too broad and the quantity of information will be overwhelming. Select a topic that is too specific and the quantity of information may be too limited.
“How...” and “Why...” questions tend to be broad. • “Who...”, “Where...”, and “When...” questions tend to be specific.
Formulating a Research Question • Research topic: DIVORCE AND CHILDREN • Five possible primary research questions • How are children affected when parents divorce? • Does the age of the child at the time of the divorce affect their ability to cope? • Is there a relationship between school achievement and parental divorce? • How are a child’s future relationships affected when their parents divorce? • Should parent’s stay together for the “sake of the children?”
Formulating a Research Question • For each question identify the possible barriers you may face trying to conduct primary research • Question 1 - Too broad, need to narrow it down • Question 2 - Need two samples - different ages, what age grouping should be used? • Question 3 - School records are confidential, poor school achievement could be the result of something else (not divorce) • Question 4 - This is a longitudinal study, need to study the sample over an extended period of time • Question 5 - Yes/No question, question needs to be revised if it is used, similar to Question 1
Formulating a Research Question • Select the question you feel is the most suitable for a primary research study. • Does the age of the child at the time of the divorce affect their ability to cope? • Need to revise the question, be more specific, what is meant by their ability to “cope”.
