A 7-Point Summary • A research topic usually deals with at least two concepts or ideas. • The focus of the research topic is usually the relationship between the two concepts. • Select a topic that is too broad and the quantity of information will be overwhelming. • Select a topic that is too specific and the quantity of information may be too limited.
A 7-Point Summary (Cont’d) • “How...” and “Why...” questions tend to be broad. • “Who...”, “Where...”, and “When...” questions tend to be specific. • “What...” questions depend on the wording of the question.

Formulating a Research Question • For each question identify the possible barriers you may face trying to conduct primary research • Why did Canada change the capital punishment law? • Too specific; might only have ONE answer • Should different crimes warrant different punishments? • Too broad; involves researching different crimes and their sentences, etc. • Should Canada reinstate capital punishment? • Requires a “Why” • What are the arguments for/against capital punishment in Canada today? • Does not require analysis; addition: why is capital punishment such a contentious issue in Canada today?
Formulating a Research Question • Select the question you feel is the most suitable for both primary and secondary research study. • Select the question that you feel provides the most focus without being too specific • Select the question that intrigues you the most
