  3. College is a Culture • When your students first arrive at your college, are they enfranchised members of that culture? • What problems do your new students face as they participate in the culture of college?

Student Success Looks Like…..? • If you could describe where your students would be at the end of their first year of college in terms of each of the problems you identified, where would they be? • Does your college have initiatives that are designed to address these problems? Do they work together in an integrated, coherent way to increase student success?

  6. FEP @ SAC: Essential Features SAC Demographics (Fall 2011) FEP Demographics (overall) ≅ 500+ Students 60% Female 87% Latino 18-21 Years Old 90% Daytime • ≅ 18,000 Credit Students • 1,476 New Freshman • 52% Female • 65% Latino • 42% Daytime

  7. FEP @ SAC: Essential Features Program History • Started in 1996 (Title III HSI) • Key Ingredient - Faculty Leadership • Gaining and maintaining traction • Since 2004 – primarily grant funded (Title V, Irvine Foundation/SSPIRES, BSI)

  8. FEP @ SAC: Essential Features • Cohorts in sequential linked classes. • Counselors & Teachers meet weekly with partners and once monthly with all members of the program. • One Year in duration

  9. Counselor in the Classroom • Based on the Puente Model • Learning Specialist • Model Success Behaviors • Connection to Support Services • Develop Ed Plans • Time Management • Access to Counselor every week of their First Year

  12. The Partnership with Research • Ave. persistence rate to a second semester (1996-2010) • FEP = 83% • Control = 71% • All Freshmen = 56.3% • Completion rate of a two course seq. in one year (1996-2004) • FEP English = 42.8% • Control English = 26.8% • FEP Math = 34.7% • Control Math = 21.5%
