  2. Road transport in the world • Estimated Global Road accidents 1998 • Highly motorised Countries = 110,000 per year • Developing countries = 640,000 • Total = 750,000+ • Equivalent to approximately 2,000 Boeing 747 crashes per year!! Or Five a day = killing all the passenger !!

Road transport in the world • Road transport was the number 9 killer • in 1990 and will be number 3 in 2020: • 2000 die on the road every day • equal to 6 full Boeing 747’s every day • 25-35% are pedestrians • 10-20% are children under 15 • cost: 1 billion US$ every day • the suffering is NOT measurable • this is a world wide problem NOT ACCEPTABLE

  4. Road transport in the world • Road transport is the backbone of • modern society & economy: • Fast • Comfortable & convenient • Provides communication links • Generates jobs & income • It is fun • It is essential • We cannot and do not want to “live” without it

Stop the killing on our roads Key Road Safety Problems in Oman: • Speeding • Driver behaviour (overtaking, tailgating) • Young drivers • Driver training and testing • Impaired drivers: fatigue • Dangerous road locations • Pedestrians • Passenger protection (rear seat belts, children) • Rescue system (communications, ambulances)
