Traffic Accidents Symposium Sultan Qaboos University 6th May 2003 How does PDO Manage the Road Safety Habib Al-Maamari PDO-Corporate HSE, Road Transport Advisor
Road transport in the world • Estimated Global Road accidents 1998 • Highly motorised Countries = 110,000 per year • Developing countries = 640,000 • Total = 750,000+ • Equivalent to approximately 2,000 Boeing 747 crashes per year!! Or Five a day = killing all the passenger !!
Road transport in the world • Road transport was the number 9 killer • in 1990 and will be number 3 in 2020: • 2000 die on the road every day • equal to 6 full Boeing 747’s every day • 25-35% are pedestrians • 10-20% are children under 15 • cost: 1 billion US$ every day • the suffering is NOT measurable • this is a world wide problem NOT ACCEPTABLE
Road transport in the world • Road transport is the backbone of • modern society & economy: • Fast • Comfortable & convenient • Provides communication links • Generates jobs & income • It is fun • It is essential • We cannot and do not want to “live” without it
Oman:Strong growth in vehicle numbers 614 fatalities in 1998, 580 in 2002

The tragedy behind the statistics NOT ACCEPTABLE
The transportsystem Other Road Users The Driver Roads & Environment Vehicle &Load Accidents are caused by threats created by:
Low CoG Rollovers & Centre of Gravity High CoG Would you drive these cars in the same manner when taking a corner or bend ??? Of course NOT !!!4WD High CoG car: adjust your driving & speed.
Rollovers & Centre of Gravity ! Adjust your driving & speed???
