DNA What is the job of DNA? Increasing Difficulty • Lesson Learning Outcomes:
Whatisdna? • DNA is amazing! • It can make EXACT copies of itself • It provides instructions for cells to make proteins
Video time! • We are going to extract the DNA from Kiwi Fruit • Watch the video to find out how to do it…
Match the procedure with the reason – write it in next to the correct step
HowsimilarisyourDNAto...? • The person sitting next to you
HowsimilarisyourDNAto...? • 99.7 -99.9%
HowsimilarisyourDNAto...? • Chimpanzee
HowsimilarisyourDNAto...? • A banana
Whatmakesorganismsdifferent? Organisms differ because they have different genes. • Humans have human genes • Gerbils have gerbil genes • Bananas have (yes, you’ve guessed it) banana genes!
Geneticinformation • The nucleus of living cells contain chromosomes which are made up of a string of genes. • Different genes control the development of different characteristics by issuing instructions to the cell.
WhatisDNA? Chromosomes and their genes are made of a molecule called DNA. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. The DNA molecule looks like a twisted ladder this spiral shape is called a DOUBLE HELIX Each chromosome is a very long molecule of tightly coiled DNA. DNA molecules carry the code that controls what cells are made of and what they do.
DNABases The double helix ‘ladder’ of a DNA molecule is held together by ‘rungs’ made from pairs of chemicals called bases. There are four types of bases, and they are usually identified by their initials. A C G T
DNABases Base pairs hold the two strands of the DNA helix together. A A T T C C G G It is the sequence of these bases along a DNA molecule that forms the genetic code– it’s that simple!
reflection • Write a tweet (140 characters) to summarise what you know about DNA • It can be your favourite fact or something about where it is stored
