  2. Why does the FAANeed Weather ? • Air Traffic Control – As Safety is paramount, ATC needs to know location of hazardous Wx (i.e., Thunderstorm, Inflight Icing, Turbulence) to provide Wx Advisories to pilots • Traffic Flow Management – For NAS Capacity to meet Demand, ATCSCC & Center traffic flow specialists need knowledge of weather that impacts traffic flow (present & future) to plan & collaborate with AOCs for routing/re-routing around hazardous Wx • Domain Servers - WARP, ITWS, and OASISenable rapid dissemination of single source of Wx data/products [from NWS] to ATC, TFM, GA, and AOCs to support both Safety and Capacity F E D E R A L A V I A T I O N A D M I N I S T R A T I O N • A I R T R A F F I C O R G A N I Z A T I O N

  3. Last 12-18 Months • Both Safety- & Capacity-impacting graphical Wx products have emerged from Wx R&D and transitioned into Operations • 1-hour Thunderstorm forecast product (NCWF) and Current Icing Potential (CIP) product on WARP • On ADDS: Thunderstorm (NCWF & CCFP), Inflight Icing (Current Icing Potential (CIP) and Forecast (FIP)), & Graphical Turbulence Guidance (GTG) available for limited Users via Internet Note: CIP, FIP, and GTG presently have ‘banners’ restricting operational use to Meteorologists & Dispatchers F E D E R A L A V I A T I O N A D M I N I S T R A T I O N • A I R T R A F F I C O R G A N I Z A T I O N

  4. Next 12-18 months AWC products sent • Internally via WARP WINS to • TFM specialists at ATCSCC & ARTCCs • TFM Automation Systems • Flight Service Station (FSS) automation* *Note: Products may go to FSS via Vendor pending FSS contract award • Externally via WARP WINS to AOC Dispatchers via CDMNet F E D E R A L A V I A T I O N A D M I N I S T R A T I O N • A I R T R A F F I C O R G A N I Z A T I O N

  5. Next 12-18 months (cont’d) • Restructure process to broaden operational access (not just for Meteorologists & Dispatchers initially) for AWC products • To Users via ADDS/Internet • To FAA Service Providers via WARP WINS • Also, make products from limited number of ITWS sites as well as 1-Hour Terminal Convective Wx Forecast (from 4 ITWS Prototypes) accessible via • ITWS Displays in ARTCCs, TRACONs • ITWS web server • To AOCs via CDMNet F E D E R A L A V I A T I O N A D M I N I S T R A T I O N • A I R T R A F F I C O R G A N I Z A T I O N

  6. Needed Improvements • Data Usage • Restructure AWRTT & AMS processes to ensure AWC product Certification, Training & Procedures are in place PRIOR product availability • Ensure funding stream for more than R&D • Dissemination • Reduce delay implementing AWC products on FAA Wx Servers & automation systems (advance notice needed to update system software) • Use System Engineering best practices to ensure “cost beneficial” solutions • 1-hour Terminal Convective Wx Forecast from all ITWS sites accessible via Internet/Web Server F E D E R A L A V I A T I O N A D M I N I S T R A T I O N • A I R T R A F F I C O R G A N I Z A T I O N
