  2. Europe – National Libraries

  3. Where are we?

  4. Europe – without Spain and France

  5. Digitized manuscripts

  6. How to share these data? • Uniform search through the portals: • General: TEL • Specialized: CERL-MSS • These portals are on the first basic stage of their developments • Joint building of a common resource (Manuscriptorium solution)

  7. Manuscriptorium • Launched on-line in autumn 2003 • Shared catalogue and digital library • More than 700,000 pages • Images • Structured full texts • Manuscripts, old printed books, historical maps • In average: 30 parallel users

  8. Metadata schema todayMaster+ http://digit.nkp.cz/MMSB/1.1/msnkaip.xsd

  9. Partial standards • Identification and more • MASTER.dtd • Technical description • NISO Z39.87 • DIG35 • (ICC + colour targets) • Page level • Former Memoria standard

  10. Metadata schema tomorrowKDD – Complex Digital Document • Application of METS – remapping of major Master+ sections into KDD has been done Complex Digital Document KDD Heading Description metadata Identification records Related works in XML Digital copies Multimedia docs Full texts Referenced external docs Audio recordings

  11. Compatibility and connectivity • Transformation from MARC formats on the identification level • Creation of profiles for communication • MARC for Z39.50 – used only for the Czech National Portal (Uniform Information Gateway) • MARC, MODS, various DC versions for concrete harvesters (used for TEL, CERL-MSS, and M-CAST portal)

  12. [Kramerius] • W3C schemas • Digitized periodicals • Digitized monographs • Built in production tools: • NL specific (XMetal-based) • Commercial (Sirius complex digigization solution – Elsyst Engineering) • Built in the Kramerius DL application that is going to be linked to the Union Catalogue

  13. Data • Full text structured following our TEI-based DTD (starting) • Images: • 3W recommended formats for Manuscriptorium current documents (JPEG and GIF/PNG) • MrSID + Lizardtech Express server for scanned maps • [DjVu for newspapers and modern monographs (Kramerius)]

  14. Internationalized Manuscriptorium • The main problem lies in the area of psychology: • Why should I/we be taken aboard by the Manuscriptorium? • Rather typical situation: • Availability of scanned output • Often not associated with a catalogue record • Even if so, no complex document (XML) format used • No or not good presentation tools

  15. We offer the tools • The most difficult problem in such situation lies in the area of • Structuring metadata • Linking them correctly to the sets of images Image Bank IB-LTx Image Bank IB-PLx Image Bank IB-XY Central metadata database Image Bank IB-SK1 Image Bank IB-ESx

  16. M-TOOL • Freely downloadable in CZ and EN • Supporting • Basic identification • Structuring of pages • Renaming of image files and generation of correct links to the images stored at any chosen URL • Validation • Output: XML file of the whole document that is Manuscriptorium compatible • International workshop 9 June 2006 – after that possible new development goals will be defined
