  3. “Tilting at Windmill” pp. 618-623 *What heats your house? We use oil, coal, and natural gas for heating homes, electric lights, and many other things. * Coal and other fossil fuel sources come from the ground, and there’s a limited amount of it. Once we use up most of the fossil fuels, the little bit left in the ground is going to be too expensive to pump out. The price of fuel will become too expensive for it to be practical for people to use. We need new sources of energy!

Preview text on p. 618-623 • This is an informational article on using windmills to help solve the energy crisis. • What causes us to run out of fuel (such as oil)? • What would happen if we ran out of oil? • What effect would it have on your life? • Look at the illustrations on pages 620 and 622. Describe the images on these pages. What do they tell you? • Do you know anyone who uses alternative kinds of energy?

  5. Oil gone? Are we running out of oil quicker than we thought?Could be, according to an article in today's British newspaper, the Independent. Americans use about 25% of the world's energy but represent less than five percent of the world's population.

  6. Alternative Energy Sources • Hydropower-dams • Solar power-expensive/cut down trees for more light • Nuclear-by product of uranium is radioactive (What do you do with the waste?) • Geothermal-harnesses heat of the planet to heat/cool home

  7. AS YOU READ • Think about the effects of using windmills for energy. • What are the advantages of this type of energy? • Are there disadvantages? • Should this problem be solved now or should it be left as a problem for society in the future?

  10. Brain Pop: Wind Turbines On the iPad, go to the Brain Pop app. Click on “More BrainPop.” Then, look for the movie on “Wind Energy.” Play the movie. Take some notes on what you learned and share with the class. *Also, feel free to take the quiz. Search for other movies on renewable energy. *How will YOU save the world?
