Public health research that informs practice What are social determinants of health? What are social determinants that inform community-engaged research outcomes? How might social determinants also inform the research process, research findings, and interpretation and dissemination of research findings? Framing the Discussion

Interactions with family, friends, co-workers, and others in the community; Cultural attitudes, norms, and expectations; Social relationships and policies in community settings; Policies in governmental, corporate, and non-governmental sectors; Socio-economic conditions; Access to resources to meet daily needs and aspirations. The social environment is the aggregate of social and cultural institutions, norms, patterns, beliefs, and processes that influence the life of an individual or community.
Understanding the history of the community that is being researched Considering how health-related attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors have been shaped in response to this history and the current socio-political circumstances Critically assessing congruence between priorities and needs of the researcher and the community Actively involving the community in study design (research questions, methods, recruitment) Social Determinantsand the Research Process
