Workforce - Staff Skills • Sector Skills Council expects that teachers of specialist and principal learning will be qualified and experienced in the industry; • One partner (at least) must be participating in the functional skills pilots; • Commitment to Continuous Professional Development for existing staff; • Plans for new staff to add to skills and qualification of existing workforce.
Specific Evidence for Diploma Specialism • Understanding specific need and breadth of the diploma line. • Record of previous delivery. • Allocation of programme delivery to partners. • Arrangement for numbers and progression to jobs or HE. • Facilities. • Managing facilities. • engagement with industry and other sectors. • Employer involvement in planning, delivery, evaluation. • Realistic work environments.
Gateway 2 Preparation • ELBS Studies is resource intensive, high cost, low volume; • Asked by LSC to support the Diploma line across London; • 32 boroughs, adjoining authorities – Essex Herts etc; • Idea of establishing hubs of good practice in each London region; • DfES (as was) liked idea but required individual applications for each consortium; • Beacon funding for development awarded to Capel.
Gateway 2 - North London • Principal learning - Capel at Enfield • Specialist learning - Capel at Enfield • Generic Learning – 5 partner schools • Environmental theme to be mapped through GCSE curriculum and supported within schools. • Pilot agreed for September 2008 – BTEC First Diploma one day a week for two years at Capel Enfield. • Preparatory partnership with 14-16 programmes – HEAVEN (Horticulture, Environment and Animal Care Vocational Enhancement.)
Gateway 2 – East London • Principal Learning – joint between college and partners schools: environment and Sustainability theme across plants and animal pathways picked up by schools; • Specialist Learning – Capel in base at Sir John Cass linked to Stepping Stones Farm; • Generic learning – schools, one participating in functional skills pilot; • preparatory links – Hackney schools 14-16; Environment with Sir John Cass
Gateway 3 – West London • Partnership with London Borough of Ealing; Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College, local partner schools; • Base at Brent Lodge Park Animal Centre (locally known as the bunny park) to open in September 2008; • Diploma line could be offered from 2010
Gateway to East London • Partnership with Jo Richardson Community School in Barking and Dagenham; • Schools in the local consortium are unconvinced by Diplomas; • Preference for specialist vocational learning, using existing accreditation, to run alongside GCSE and A levels; • Pilot through offer of Floristry and Horticulture training.
