What is the teaching? • Academic IT skills • Word • Excel • PowerPoint • All UG and PG students in FMS, PG in SAgE • 300+ hours annually • Online tutorials • Led by a qualified teacher • Problem-based, student-led approach • Learning linked to assessment
Roles of a dem • Teach skills and techniques, not answer questions • Teaching academic IT skills • Answering student queries • Reporting to a member of staff acting as class leader • Working as a member of a team • Assisting with class set up and tidy up.
Responsibilities of a dem • Prepare thoroughly • Ensure students learn through a question-based approach to teaching. • Seek advice and guidance from other members of the teaching team • Frequent reflective practice following each teaching session.
About the role • Work in a team of up to 8 inc session lead (staff) • Most sessions last for 2 hours • Up to 90 students • 2-6 hours per month • Each week is different • Sessions are allocated evenly across the dem team of ~15students • Sessions are allocated according to availability • Payment month in arrears
Feedback and reflection • End of every session • What you can improve • What we can improve • At end of December • Formal reflection against 5 questions • Used to help us support your development requirements
About the training • Approved by UTLC and PVC TL 2009 • Compulsory for new dems • Expected for returning dems • ITLHE Part A not required but advised • Important because: • You need to know what the role involves • We need to know you have the necessary skills • Part training, part interview • Paid at half-rate
On the day • 4 hours • Covers teaching and IT skills • Session content: • Roles and Responsibilities • Core teaching skills (listening, questioning, explaining, summarising) • Problem-solving skills • Feedback and reflection • Administration
