  1. Secretariat Introduction by Jim Bourke, Senior Forestry Trade and Marketing Analyst, FAO, Rome CERTIFIED FOREST PRODUCTS

  2. Overview of certification situation Summary of country market statements Important questions OUTLINE

  3. Overview of certification based on: Forest Products Annual Market Review, 2001 (Chapter 10) on Markets for certified forest products (CFPs). Geneva Timber and Forest Discussion Paper “Forest Certification Update for the ECE Region” (Summer 2001). Other Papers, reports, seminars Continual change Increasing acceptance of certification in many areas OVERVIEW

  4. Area growing globally but still small (<3% of world’s forests) 95 % of certified area is in temperate developed countries, almost all in Europe and North America; Increasing areas in Canada and USA Little of the certified area is in developing countries, but development of schemes in e.g. Malaysia and Indonesia continuing. Increasing areas in Canada and USA OVERVIEW (contd.)

  5. OVERVIEW (contd.) Forest Areas Certified

  6. PEFC system has greatly expanded the forest area certified in Europe. Interest in developing a Pan-African Certification system. NOTE: Area is not a good indicator of products marketed. Potential supply of certified forest products is growing faster than market demand. OVERVIEW (contd.)

  7. Certification considered to have many benefits - but marketing and market access are the main reasons for support. Market demand continues to be largely from retailers - not final consumers. Main demand - parts of Western Europe, parts of USA Continuing uncertainties regarding market demand, prices, forest management impacts OVERVIEW (contd.)

  8. Growing interest in some form of mutual recognition between systems Some forestlands are achieving multiple certifications Unhelpful “attacks” by supporters of some systems Increasing focus on the question of linking C&I to certification. Growing interest by companies in chain of custody certification. OVERVIEW (contd.)

  9. Only a few countries mentioned certification - and most only briefly (Canada, Czech Rep., Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland). Points Noted: continued expansion of area certified progress on recognizing the FSC and PEFC little information is available on the market situation COUNTRY MARKET STATEMENTS

  10. certified products have only limited market share Netherlands - Dutch Parliament (Upper House) to make a decision on “red and green” mandatory labeling of timber and paper products in 2001 SUMMARY OF COUNTRY MARKET STATEMENTS (contd.)

  11. Many of the questions mentioned last year remain unclear: What is the actual demand for CFPs? Volume or value produced and sold? Current and future market share of certified products? Consumer interest in CFPs? IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

  12. Effectiveness of certification in bringing about sustainable forest management? Link to sustainable management of forests with greatest problems Government intervention - importance? significance? A trade barrier? IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

  13. Mr. Ewald Rametsteiner, University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna followed byGeneral Discussion NEXT CERTIFIED FOREST PRODUCTS PRESENTATION
