  3. What is Aquaculture? • Management of the aquatic environment to increase the harvest of useable plant and animal products

  4. OCEANS • Represents the largest body of water • Salinity in this water is high • Salinity : is the measure of total mineral solids in the water, and is measured by either Electrical Conductivity or converted to Parts Per Thousands (PPT) • Gradient: deals with types of organisms that flourish in the ocean. Gradient measures the amount of salt and its effects over time.

  5. Types of Water… • Brackish: is a mixture of fresh water and salt water. • Ex- Colorado river meeting the Gulf of Mexico in Matagorda bay • Bull shark can survive in this type of water. Any others??

  6. Where Do You Think We Can Survive? • Frogs • Turtles • Reptiles • Amphibians- A cold-blooded, smooth-skinned vertebrate of the class Amphibia, such as a frog or salamander, that characteristically hatches as an aquatic larva with gills.

  7. Land vs. Water • Amphibians • Frogs • turtles • reptiles • Are all animals that live part of their life in fresh water and the remaining on land. • Aquatic Animals • Shellfish • Crustacceans • Fish • These animals live their entire life either in fresh water, brackish water, and/or salt water

Are plants important? • Plants harvest energy from the sun through photosynthesis • What is photosynthesis? • the process by which plants some bacteria and protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into ATP, the "fuel" used by all living things • 6H2O + 6CO2 ----------> C6H12O6+ 6O2 • Also serve as waste recyclers

  9. How does it work? • How do fish breathe? • They use gills to breathe in oxygen from the water • Crustacceans have what kinds of skin? • Exoskeleton , which they molt during certain times of the year. Ex- hermit crab

  10. Aquatic life • Larvae: are mobile aquatic organisms that grow into nonmobile adults • Ex- Coral • How do fish reproduce? • Called spawning which is to lay eggs • Salmon leave salt water and travel upstream to spawn • The harvesting of fish is called seining or to seine.

More to know… • TAN= Total Ammonial Nitrogen • Too much is often toxic to aquatic species. • Toxins can have an adverse affect on the growth and development of plants and animals • pH =Measures acidity and alkalinity of water • pH scale • 7 = neutral • Below 7 = acidic • Above 7 = basic or alkaline water
