  1. Constitutional Democracy How is the United States a constitutional democracy?

  2. Who is Ronald Poppo? AMERICAN GOVERNMENT HONORS

  3. Would Rudy Eugene be Able to receive a fair Trial?

  4. Sixth Amendment • In all criminal prosecutions,(1. the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial,(2. by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law,(3. and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; 4)to be confronted with the witnesses against him; 5)to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and 6)to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.

  5. D.R.E.A.M ACT • The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, originally introduced in 2001 by Senators Dick Durbin (D.-Illinois) and Orin Hatch (R.-Utah), aims to incentivize educational achievement and encourage undocumented youth to pursue legal residency in the United States. Better known as the DREAM Act, the legislation would pave a pathway for undocumented immigrants toward legal U.S. residency via higher education or military participation, and also give them the opportunity to apply for legal permanent resident status.

  6. Arizona’s Immigration Law • “the requirement to carry alien registration documents; the prohibition on applying for work if unauthorized; and permission for warrantless arrests if there is probable cause the offense would make the person removable from the United States.” • What is your reaction to this law? Is it unconstitutional?

  7. Fourth Amendment • The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

  8. Stand Your Ground

  9. 2nd Amendment What is your position?

  10. Obama’s Prosposal • 1.The first is to mandate background checks for anyone who wants to buy a gun. (Right now, gun buyers who want to avoid background checks can, for instance, purchase a gun from a private seller at a gun show.) 2.The second is to reinstate the ban on military-style assault weapons and limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds. • 3. Third is to confirm Todd Jones as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

  11. Who is it referring to?Should adults be allowed to carry concealed weapons? • Pro • Con A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

  13. Is it better to be feared than loved? • “Because this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life, and children, as is said above, when the need is far distant; but when it [when you need their support] approaches they turn against you. And that prince who, relying entirely on their promises, has neglected other precautions, is ruined; because friendships that are obtained by payments, and not by nobility or greatness of mind, may indeed be earned, but they are not secured, and in time of need cannot be relied upon; and men have less scruple in offending one who is beloved than one who is feared, for love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserved you by a dread of punishment which never fails.” Machiavelli

  14. Rev Questions 1-5 • 1. Why is the United States a representative democracy rather than a direct democracy? • 2. What was the great debate between the Federalists and Antifederalist? • 3. What was one negative to certain leaders when the concept of popular consent was introduced after the implementation of the Declaration of Independence? • 4. How does the concept of majority and plurality rule work in practice? • 5. What entities make up Bicameralism?
