Operational Forecasting and ServicesFollow up actions, subject to funding availability
Tentative Plan of Activities (short-term) ECMWF wave products (Det. and EPS) for the Indian Ocean and Wave EPSgrams along the coast, and other ECMWF atmospheric products In-country training on weather and marine forecasting, and service delivery aspects, starting with e-learning During a transitional period, 1-2 years, while staff is being trained – place in Maldives 1 or 2 meteorologists from other WMO Member – WMO assistance Expert(s) visit to MMS to initiate implementation of verification activities (relevant to operations), and continue discussions on impact matrices and service delivery Fellowship programme at ECMWF, IMD, NCMRWF, CMA: Verification Post-processing WMO
Tentative Plan of Activities (short- to- medium-term) • Twinning arrangements with India, China and Deltares • Upgrade CMACast/MICAPs (China) • Post-processing (India) • Modelling / different scenario development (Deltares) • Training (all) • Engaging Maldives University (to assist with e.g. case study development, verification, different scenario developement) WMO
Tentative Plan of Activities (medium- to- longer-term) • Uninterrupted power supply for continuity of operations at MMS • Full-integrated observing and forecasting system • Upgrade the NWP/LAM, including higher-resolution, data-assimilation (integrate new AWS+radar into LAM) – run LAM in a cloud computing system • Systematic GIS mapping and vulnerability data – MMS to establish a partnership with the Maldives Land Survey Department and NDMC WMO
Developing a national implementation plan for IBF • Establishing a partnership / core group through the MEE (e.g. MMS, NDMC, Police, Min. of Defence, Red Crescent, Maldives Land Survey Department, Health Protection Agency) – clarify roles and responsibilities • Harmonizing criteria for classifying hazardous events (Note: seek consultation with WMO/DRR, including in relation to historical data) • Catalogue/database of events (using hazard/impact matrices) and vulnerability information • Review and harmonize SOPs • Mapping of hazards • Modelling of detailed risk maps Recommendation: to include the above aspects in the application of GCF through the MEE test footer
