India & Pakistan • Problem: • In 1947 when India becomes a free country, it has around 350 million Hindus & 100 million Muslims • The Congressional Party (which controls India) is dominated by Hindus • The Muslims lived mostly in NW & NE India and are unhappy.
India & Pakistan • When Britain gives up India it gives each region the opportunity to break free from India. • The Muslims in NW and NE India ask to be separate • Britain “partitions” or divides up India and makes the country of Pakistan. • Pakistan is in two pieces • West Pakistan and East Pakistan
On the Move • Pakistan is a Muslim country • India is a Hindu country • Most of the Muslims in India move to Pakistan • Most of the Hindus in Pakistan move to India. • 10 million people on the move • There is rioting & killing between groups and about one million people are killed in the violence
West Pakistan and East Pakistan • They share a religion, but each region is culturally very different. • Plus they are separated by 1,100 miles. • East Pakistan starts asking for its independence.
West Pakistan vs. East Pakistan • In 1971 a civil war starts • India helps East Pakistan • East Pakistan wins Independence and becomes the country of Bangladesh
