  3. What Is Philosophy? • Philosophy is what you do when you seek to understand fundamental questions about ... • … about ethics: What is a good action? • … about politics: What is a just law? • … about science: What is good evidence for a theory? • … about the mind: What is for something to be mental rather than physical? • … about the world: What is for something to cause something else? • … about art: What is for something to be beautiful?

  4. Philosophy in first year • In philosophy, it is as important to identify the interesting questions, as it is to answer them. • In first year philosophy, you learn about some of the questions that have been asked by philosophers. (M&W and MSI courses) • You also learn about the way philosophers answer questions through a number of forms of argumentation. (ACT and Logic I courses.)

  5. Argument and Critical Thinking (PHIL 1101) • The different ways in which reasons • can support a conclusion. • What counts as a good reason for a conclusion? Part 1: structures of argument and fallacies of argument - examples from the law and media. Part 2: the analysis of arguments for the weird and strange like alien space crafts, the Bermuda Triangle, Big Foot and paranormal activity.

  6. Logic 1: Beginning Logic(PHIL 1110) • The formal structure of statements and arguments. • Analysis of those structures using symbolic methods. E.g. If A then B A Therefore B. If A then B B Therefore A ✓ X Logic I is an introduction to the methods of symbolic logic. No maths background is assumed – we teach the subject from the ground up using everyday examples.

  7. Mind and World (PHIL 1102) • What is the nature of the Mind? • Do I really have free will, or are my actions pre-determined? • How can my words (noises/scribbles) have meaning?

  8. Morality, Society and the Individual (PHIL 1103) • How do I decide when actions are right or wrong? • What is justice and is it possible to create a just society?

  9. Why Study Philosophy? • To learn about some fascinating, longstanding philosophical problems. • To develop important skills: • - Clarity in thought and writing. • - The ability to critically assess an argument. • - The ability to present a case, and defend your views using reason.
